"We cannot wait for the budget to pass to put needed teachers in the classroom," Easley said. "It is critical that we fix this problem now."

"I have traveled to schools across the state where far too many classrooms are overcrowded," Easley said in a statement, adding that he visited a Charlotte school that had five kindergarten classes with 27 students in each classroom… Superintendents have been clamoring for the resources to hire teachers that they need and now those funds are available. We must move forward quickly to hire quality educators for our schools."

"We appreciate your real public service," Easley told Hill inside the half-decorated classroom where she'll begin teaching Monday morning. "We want to make sure that your class size is adequate so that you want to do it the year after and the year after that.

"Like anything else, you have to market it. You have to go out and recruit people," he said.
"All states have this problem," Easley added. "The difference is North Carolina is addressing the problem before it becomes a crisis."
