Teacher Certification

It shows that we are making real progress to ensure our students are getting the quality education they deserve," Gov. Mike Easley said in a news release from the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. "These professionals have proven they are committed to their profession."

North Carolina leads the nation in the number of teachers who have earned the certification with a total of 6,646. That means one in 13 teachers in the state are certified, Easley told the crowd of educators, politicians and schoolchildren gathered in the school's media center.

"Earning National Board Certification is no easy task," Easley said. "It requires teachers to demonstrate outstanding teaching methods and considerable content knowledge in their chosen subjects.

"These rankings show our teachers are deeply committed to the children and to education in this state," Easley said in a Monday statement. "I am proud of what they have achieved and what that means for our public schools."
